Welcome to Scares for Cares, where Halloween fun turns into something way bigger than just costumes and candy. We started this project because we wanted to take all the excitement of Halloween and turn it into a way to help kids who really need it. Scares for Cares is all about raising money for Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, while letting kids (from preschoolers to high school seniors) get super creative.
Here’s how it works: instead of just watching scary movies, kids actually make them. They get to write, direct, act, and produce their own short Halloween films - everything from creepy monsters to funny ghosts. It’s awesome to see how much creativity comes out when you give kids the chance.
And here’s the twist: people don’t just watch the movies, they vote for their favorites by making a donation. Every dollar goes directly to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. So when you’re supporting a filmmaker, you’re also helping a child in the hospital get the care they need.
What makes this so special is that it’s 100% for a good cause and a purely grassroots project. No cost to participate, no admin fees - just kids creating, communities supporting, and donations making a real impact.
So whether you’re a student who wants to make a film, someone who just loves Halloween, or someone who cares about giving back, there’s a spot for you here. Together, we can take all the scares of Halloween and turn them into something that actually makes the world a little brighter.
Escaping Asylum Horrors took first place this year with an astounding $3,980 raised.
Our second-place film is The Disappearing Tree with an incredible raise of $1,810
In third place, The Spy raised an impressive $1,675!
Nolan and Quinn Harr have always loved Halloween. Many years ago, they pulled together some friends and started building haunted houses, planning them out, decorating, acting in them, the whole deal. Instead of just keeping the money from ticket sales, they decided to donate every single dollar to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital.
Then 2020 hit, and COVID made it impossible to keep the haunted houses going. But instead of giving up, they came up with something new: making short, spooky films. Viewers could watch and then “vote” for their favorites by donating. And just like before, 100% of the money went straight to the hospital.
For the Scares for Cares crew, it’s not just about the fun of Halloween, it’s about making a difference. They know some kids have to spend holidays like Halloween in the hospital, and if this project can bring them even a little comfort or help provide better care, then it’s all worth it. Even the smallest donation adds up, and they’re proud to be part of something that is making a difference.
Since our inception in 2019, Scares for Cares has raised over $25,000. Our goal is to raise $100,000 by 2028.
Anyone 18 or younger is encouraged to participate! The movies can be up to 5 minutes long and can be filmed simply using a phone or iPad. Contact us today to get started!
